Explorer Units are Area based and not directly attached to Scout Groups.
Explorers are young people aged 14 to 18 years of age who are encouraged to lead themselves in deciding the programme and direction of the Unit, with support and guidance from Leaders.
The Unit also encourages Explores to be a part of the Young Leaders Scheme, which enables them to help as a Young Leader in one of the Beaver, Cub and Scout Sections.
There is wider scope for activities such as expeditions, offshore sailing, mountaineering etc.
Scouts when approaching their 14th birthday, are encouraged to join their nearest Explorer Unit, and the Explorer Scout Leader (ESL) is invited along to a Scout meeting to talk to the Scouts on joining Explorer Scouts.
